One of the privileges of working in the NHL is meeting former great players such as Bobby Hull who was one of the standout performers in the 1960s. I meet him around 2015 and told him I am going to mention a game I attended as a child and that he would remember it.

It was March 25, 1962, with the Blackhawks playing the New Tork Rangers at Madison Square Garden in New York. Since this was the last game of the regular season and both teams had already clinched their playoff spot, the game had no impact on the standings, However, going into this game Bobby Hull (Chicago) and Andy Bathgate (New York) were tied for the league scoring race with 83 points each.

Hull scored a goal early in the first period to move ahead but Bathgate tallied as well later in the period to keep the scoring race tied at 84 all. Not only did Bobby recall this game but added in the waning minutes of the game his teammate Reggie Fleming was shadowing Andy Bathgate and holding him so he would not get free to get a shot. The two players ended the season in a tie but since Hull had more goals, he was awarded the scoring title.
